Meet Felix and the Green Flag Football Team

Green Flag Football Team
The Green Flag Football team has dominated the Charter School Athletic Association (NOCSAA) flag football league, as the undefeated champions for the last four years! The team's success can be attributed to the inclusive, supportive environment both the coach and teammates have created.

Meet Felix!
Felix and Coach T going over goals
Felix has been on the Green flag football team for two years. Felix is in the 6th grade, and lives with his mom, dad, older brother and two sisters. In addition to training for flag football, Felix loves to go camping, take trips with his family, and play laser tag. Felix has been working with Coach Tamara Schuit since the second grade. Hard work along with the support of family and teammates, has enabled Felix to excel on the flag football team.

We asked Felix a few questions:
Q: What motivated you to be on the team?
A: Peyton Manning on the Denver Broncos because he finished college, he's an awsome player and he worked hard for what he wanted.

Q: What steps has he taken to get where he is now? (football?)
A: Lots of running so I play longer, push-ups, sit-ups and working with Coach T for 5 years (she helps me to do my best and work hard).

Q: What are your future goals?
A: Go to high school, then college for 2 years and then work with my brother Lewis.

A big shout out to the Green Flag Football team! Good luck on your next game.

What you missed in athletics over the weekend.

Saturday Samuel J. Green and Langston Hughes Academy played each other in football. Coach Richardson has led Green to 4 consecutive championships, riding an undefeated season each time. On Saturday, Green lost for the first time in four years. The team’s reaction at the end of the game: to applaud LHA for a great game, shake hands, and walk into the team huddle with their heads held high. Saturday’s game was not only a fantastic display of respect, but demonstrated the lessons of self-control and pride Coach continually instills in our young athletes.

Big congratulations to LHA’s flag football team for defeating Green!

Also this Saturday was the Tipitina’s Foundation Rhythm and Blues 5K run. The race was hosted by the Tipitina’s Foundation in partnership with New Orleans Track Club. Proceeds from the run went towards supporting the purchase of marching shoes and uniforms for New Orleans area school marching band programs. Check out our Dibert scholars who ran as members of Youth Run Nola.

The Joseph S. Clark Preparatory Bulldogs took home a victory against Ben Franklin on FridaySeptember 27th. Bulldog quarterback lead the team with 148 rushing yards and two touchdowns on 16 carries while going 1-for-3 for 35 yards. Go Bulldogs!

Kathleen: Beautification of the Bulldog Campus

mural progression from left to right, top to bottom
It all started with a few Clark Prep seniors' desire to upgrade the Gymnasium walls. Senior Seandré Napoleon and others saw the dull grey-white walls as blank templates: potential to create vibrant, student-designed and completed murals.

Their artistic vision was encouraged by Principal Reginald Coleman who approved the “sports wall mural” idea and set the students on their way to project implementation. National Honors Society students and their friends worked on the murals in the Gymnasium with Ms. Melanie Padron, artist in her free time and Social Worker for 11-12 full-time, over Winter Break.

After researching pictures online, the mural took a total of three days: projecting the selected images onto the wall, tracing, blending, shading and finishing touches were finished with over two weeks until graduation on Wednesday, May 22nd. Left image shows progression from left to right, top to bottom. Ms. Dynte Moore, “unofficial founder” of the mural, explained that shading certain aspects of the design was hardest, but when viewing the mural in its entirety you can clearly see they hit the mark. On Tuesday, May 7 the outside mural was completed. To see this student-driven aesthetic plan through, the Class of 2013 founded a tradition at Clark Prep: moving forward, each graduation class will leave a parting mural gift with their soon-to-be alma mater.

Faculty immediately embraced and realized the beauty of this recently completed artwork, and students feel the same way. The mural is yet another critical component that adds meaning and pride to being a Bulldog. Way to go, Class of 2013!

Kathleen: First Annual Treme Day!

And they're off!

On March 9, 2013 Clark Prep held its first annual Treme Day: 5K + Health and Wellness Fair. The fundraiser took place on campus, with sign-in beginning at 8 am and the event ending at 1 pm. Within these 5 hours, over 250 people completed a 5K (3.1 mile) race (with celebrity starter, Kermit Ruffins), ate food that ranged from turkey dogs to apples, from cabbage with smoked turkey to pasta or jambalaya and rice, watched Clark Prep’s Marching Band and Dance Team perform and, of course, took part in all that was the Health and Wellness Fair.

Having Fun
The entire Gymnasium, Cafeteria, outside field and many classrooms transformed into health-related seminars and activities. Participants were free to roam and mill around Clark Prep’s campus to check out all the fun, valuable and tasty health information found throughout the school. So many interested and curious participants tried and loved the various healthy food options at the Fair, like yogurt parfaits and green smoothies. The massage room had a line for almost the entire event and Zumba with Instructor Mia got just about everybody on their feet.

We enjoyed hosting this annual event and seeing it become real for the first time that Saturday. We deeply appreciate all of the support we received to make this event possible. It was great to see so many community members and partners participate or table at the Health and Wellness Fair. This event couldn’t have happened without all the Clark Prep support from faculty and students, along with all of our sponsors and partners. Go Bulldogs!

Kathleen: Clark Prep Cross Country @ the Crescent City Fall Classic!

Last Saturday, November 10 Clark Prep’s Cross Country Team participated in the Crescent City Fall Classic!  The Crescent City Fall Classic started and ended at Tad Gormley Stadium in City Park. This 5K, or 3.1 mile, race started at 8:30 a.m.  When our runners finished they bested their personal goals; freshman Mariah H. even placed first in her age group! The race welcomed younger age-group turn out by offering age-specific prizes and cash grants to schools with the highest number of students competing in the race.

The Crescent City Fall Classic encourages students starting at age 12, but adult runners participate as well. Staff from Clark Prep, Green and friends of Clark Prep ran with the Cross Country team. Everyone is so proud of the team’s results and we're hoping to have our runners race in the 10K Crescent City Classic in March as well. The March race takes place on Saturday, March 30.  Says coach Darcy McKinnon, "Cross Country is about perseverance and pride.  Congratulations to the Bulldogs who showed the discipline and joy to make it through the race!"  Keep working hard and GREAT JOB, Bulldogs!
